Skin Health Tips For Ageing Skin After 40

Let me share with you my very basic, but essential, simple skin health tips for ageing skin to look younger naturally after the age of 40.


As a Skin Facialist and Nutritional Therapist I call myself a Skin Health Expert. I work online and in my private clinic, every day with clients, just like you, who naturally improve their skin tone and firmness with the home skincare and skin rejuvenation treatments.

By combing simple professional skin health routines with noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatments, such as micro-needling to achieve natural long-lasting results without the risk of losing the natural look.

I'm going to share with you my best skin health advice that I believe to be most efficient way to achieve results from home skin routines and treatments. 

Your Skin Health Age 

Our skin cell turnover decreases at the same time as our natural ability to exfoliate. We produce less collagen each day, the protein in our skin that keeps it sort of smooth and wrinkle-free, when we need it the most.

Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally within our skin cells, which helps us to maintain the moisture also depletes. As a result, our skin becomes thinner and weaker. It loses the youthful springiness and elasticity that results in dull, wrinkled and heavy looking skin.

My skin health tips are not new, but they are clear and concise and the steps that ensure my clients improve their ageing skin into firmer, plumped, more radiant, glowing skin. They are simple to do, and you can do yourself at home. They will help you reduce the signs of ageing and keep you looking younger and fresher for longer.

Tip No 1 - Natural Exfoliation

Regular exfoliation is so important at any age, but particularly as we get older, our skin's natural exfoliation will slow down. For example, at 18, your skin cell turnover is l25 days at 40 it can take like 45 days for the cells to refresh themselves.

Which means your skin cells are visible on your skin for twice as long. This results in dullness and thicker skin. Furthermore, these older skin cells struggle to communicate to the next skin cell layer, they prevent the essential vitamin and minerals from absorbing it down to the new skin cells. This results in enlarge open pores because they are holding on to product rather than absorbing it down to rejuvenated the new skin cells.

A key indicator you may have noticed it that you get an orange peel texture on your chin, but you've got really dry lips. This a classic symptom of imbalance skin cells regulation. 

The solution is to exfoliate every day, but it's important to do it gently.

The No 1 tips is to naturally melt away daily skin cells, rather than scrubbing at them. You want to encourage the fresh ones to come to the surface,  happy and hydrated and bursting with nutrients to give you that bright complexion.

To [PREPARE] your skin, which is the most important step. Do NOT scrub your skin with the wrong kind of exfoliator, as this can damage the epidermis and your skin won't like you for it. 

The idea is to use a liquid or a chemical exfoliator, commonly known now AHAs, PHAs as they cause a natural enzymatic reaction that breaks the glue down within the skin excellarmatrix that holds the skin cells together.
In addition this allows you to [TARGET] skin concerns with serums and creams as they can penetrate into your skin cells to nourish the next ones underneath.

Please use chemical exfoliators or peels rather than physical ones. They are commonly derived from natural sugars like milk and fruits. Lactic acid, Mandelic acid, Citric acid in lower concentrations PHAs and AHAs will moisturize, but in higher concentrations, they will soothe and exfoliate.

The acid ratio is very important when it comes to the higher concentrations for the exfoliation. If it's lower, it can be more effective. 

The most important takeaway from exfoliation is not to scrub or use a foaming wash on your skin, and to move away from beauty therapy treatments like microdermabrasion.

Tip No 2 - Build Strength

To help your skin health build strength it needs Collagen. Which is the protein that forms the building blocks for your skin. It makes up 70% of your skin structure and is the key ingredient that keeps smooth and wrinkle-free.

Unfortunately, as we age, we start to lose collagen and natural production of elastin and hyaluronic acids. 

Each year our bodies will produce 1% less of collagen. Therefore we need to add more either topically or we can consume it in our diets to maintain our bones, muscles, and tendons as well to help naturally support the skin health.

The best sources of collagen are from bones of animals, but more recently fish and algae have become very popular.

You can consume collagen by drinking broths and soups, but you can also buy collagen shots and supplements too. The key thing is to also add collagen to boosters and serums into your [TARGET] phase of your skin care routine.

Other ingredients such peptide and amino acids and growth factors, will also stimulate plumping and firming effect that we're looking for.

The serums and supplements will give you the vitamins and minerals to support skin health strength by stimulating the collagen synthesis.

Tip No 3 - Trigger Inflammatory Response

An inflammatory response is a trauma to the skin and is another way to stimulate the natural production of collagen. The body's natural reaction to control trauma is to produce the fibroblasts. These are the building blocks in your skin matrix to create the collagen and then hold the hyaluronic acid.

The controlled inflammation response is stimulated by treatments such as mesotherapy, micro-needling and HIFU [Face] these are in-clinic treatments that must be carried out by a professional.

These treatment will leave your skin red and plumped as a reaction to the trauma but no blood is nesscary to stimulate the tightening effect. This skin trauma should be regular and consistent to give you younger-looking skin.

When choosing your facial treatments the relaxing product on product off facials are very nice and lovely, but without some sort of inflammation to produce collagen and elastin when after 40 years old, you're just having a massage.

Tip No 4 - Hydration

To give your skin health extra support you need to apply ONLY nutrients it recognizes. For this tip think about that plant that you forgot to water. When you pour half a pint of water on it, what happens? This is the same when it comes to oily or dry skin and from a skin health point of view. The product is not absorbed! 

You know that our ability to retain moisture depletes with age. The hyaluronic acid naturally into your skin it will pull water from the air into your skin? Hence how our skin changes with the change of seasons and when we travel on an aeroplane. In our younger years skin cells can hold up to four times the amount of water when the hyaluronic acid levels are positive. So as we age we naturally lose the ability to hold the nutrients due to the reduction of hyaluronic acid.

Fit and healthy people tend to be about 60% water therefore it's essential to keep your hydration levels maintained for overall health.

However, when it comes to skin health just drinking water is not enough to fight the anti-aging battle.

Hyaluronic acid is the best way to help maintain and retain your water levels in your skin and body. As it absorbs up to a thousand times, its own mass in water. When applied topically, it can retain the moisture in your skin no matter what the humidity of the atmosphere is.

When applied to the skin or taken as a supplement it can plump the skin and smooth wrinkles along the way. Further more once you have maintained your Hyaluronic acid your skin cell will happily absorb other essential nutrients required for ageing skin. 

Tip No 5 - Vitamins and Minerals

Once hydrated skin cells want further recognisable nutrients such a water and fat based vitamins and minerals to maintain health and to communicate with each to natural exfoliate.

Water-soluble vitamins are required everyday for our overall health and especially skin health because they can't be sorted in your body.

Your skin cells and your body will absorb what they want, and then excrete or metabolise the rest. Great examples of this are vitamin C and vitamin B complex. They are water-soluble vitamins to protect and metabolic boosters to provide energy to renew skin cells.

Vitamin C provides oxidation protection against stresses and pollutions and commonly found in plant and animal-based products foods for the body and in your skin care.

But careful as too much can be a complete waste of time as your body will except what is doesn’t need.

It is essential to get the right balance and consistency. This is especially important when it comes to Fat soluble vitamins [Lipids] as the are different [A D E K]. They can be stored in cell membranes as lipids and in the liver. Too much of these vitamins can be toxic, too little and your get disturbed skin cell health.

Lipids provide strength in the cell membrane. This allows cells to communicate and hold moisture and other essential vitamins within the cell.  But too much can disrupt the skin cell membrane and acts as an exfoliate for example too much vitamin A (retinol) will burn and shed your to skin cells.

The other nutrients required for skin health is minerals. Minerals are essential for skin cell development for repair, for example, zinc, copper and sulfur.

These minerals play an important role in improving the skin cell structure and supporting the healthiest skin to maintain the pH levels of your skin.

These minerals are commonly found in our skin home routine and are essential to provide overall skin health.

In summary to to improve your skin health as you age is to exfoliate, build internal strength with collagen, Hyaluronic acid, stimulate inflammatory response and feed your skin with essential minerals to repair and protect.
